Abstract: The U.S. education system appears to be set up to not teach students about the dark side of colonialism. It tells the story of the colonizers, not the colonized. We see the effects of settler colonialism in our everyday lives, but we don’t even realize it because from a young age, we are educated to ignore it. Through this paper, I discuss my experiences as a student and a researcher and apply the theory of settler colonialism to monuments in the state of Kansas that reinforce settler colonial ideals.
