Black and Indigenous (and subjected to settler colonialism): Ann Marie Beals, Ciann L Wilson, ‘Mixed-blood: Indigenous-Black identity in colonial Canada’, AlterNative: An International Journal of Indigenous Peoples, 2020

Abstract: In thinking through Indigenous-Blackness in colonial Canada, we explored the ramifications of the intersections of mixed-blood Indigenous-Black identity with colonialism, racism, gender, and social determinants of health, and how the outcomes of such intersections manifest as erasure, racism, and fractured identity. This critical research is nested within the larger Proclaiming Our Roots project, which uses an arts-based community-based methodology to respect and represent local and global Indigenous ontologies and epistemologies, and utilizes digital oral storytelling, community mapping, and semi-structured interviews as research methods. Community members gathered in workshops held in Toronto and Halifax/Dartmouth, Canada, as these are sites where Indigenous and Black communities came together in the face of white colonial oppression. Community members and researchers told their stories and reshaped their geographies as acts of resistance. This work brings to the forefront Indigenous-Black identity, and how Indigenous-Black people manoeuvre within Western settler society.

The ‘settler question’ disappears in the ‘startup’ colony: Joseph F Getzoff, ‘Start-up nationalism: The rationalities of neoliberal Zionism’, Environment and Planning D: Society and Space, 2020

Abstract: This article examines current manifestations of Zionist political-economy by analyzing discourses that frame Israel as a “Start-Up Nation”—that is, a unique economic achievement that offers a successful business model for the world. By focusing on the 2009 book from the Council of Foreign Relations, Start-Up Nation, this article theorizes “neoliberal Zionism” as a manifestation of Zionism that valorizes specific kinds of neoliberal rationalities in order to garner support for the State of Israel. In particular, neoliberal Zionism produces an entrepreneurial Israeli citizen-subject whose unique cultural attributes derive from compulsory military service and a Zionist past sanitized of conflict with Palestinians. Further, these discourses position this neoliberal Zionist subject as economically out-competing Arabs and Palestinians. At stake is how neoliberalism and exclusionary nationalism potentially mobilize each other and operate as “management” models for other states to adopt.

Abstract: This article works to clarify the dynamics of Jews, white supremacy, and Christian hegemony in the United States by addressing Karl Marx’s attention to the “free states of North America” in his infamous review essay “On the Jewish Question” (1844). Marx’s review discloses both the Christian form of subjectivity universalized by political emancipation and the racial whiteness upon which Jewish emancipation rested in settler-colonial territory. Together, these paths untraveled but implied by Marx demonstrate the complementarity of Jewishness and whiteness in the racial imagination of US democracy, dismantle assumptions that antisemitism and white supremacy are necessarily isomorphic, and suggest how Jewish inclusion as citizens in the democratic state signals the constitution of a Judeo-Christian subject.

Excerpt: This special issue of Hypatia aims to cultivate and encourage theorizing about Indigenous1 philosophies and decolonizing methodologies. Although feminist theorizing has explored the diverse legacies and experiences of marginalized voices, including Indigenous concerns, philosophy has failed to acknowledge and systematically examine its own role in perpetuating colonial oppression. This special issue aims to explore how Indigenous philosophy might transform feminist theorizing. For the purposes of this issue, the terms Indigenous, Native, or First Nations people refer to peoples who have developed and maintained cultural ties in a specific region prior to colonial contact. Hence, the issue frames Indigenous identities within the context of resisting colonial domination and advocating political stances of sovereignty and self-determination. Moreover, it is important to understand the intersections and distinctions between the terms Indigenizing and decolonizing. Though not all projects of decolonization may specifically address Indigenous issues, it is important to see how decolonizing methodologies play a role in advancing Indigenous projects and perhaps developing coalitions among multiple communities affected by colonialism.

Excerpt: On 11 November 1965, the Southern African colony of Southern Rhodesia unilaterally declared independence from Britain. Incensed by the ‘winds of change’ blowing through the continent, the white settler state broke off negotiations with Harold Wilson’s Labour government, and decided to go it alone. Britain, having handed political autonomy to the Rhodesian government (along with control of one of Africa’s most technologically-advanced militaries), was powerless to resist this act of treason, which was somewhat ironically taken in Queen Elizabeth II’s name.

The settler colonial conquest of time: Yara Sa’di-Ibraheem, ‘Jaffa’s times: Temporalities of dispossession and the advent of natives’ reclaimed time’, Time & Society, 2020

Abstract: The present article addresses the changes of temporalities within a prolonged displacement process, which has been taking place in the Palestinian city of Jaffa while under Israeli rule. Various temporal perspectives have been imposed by the Israeli authorities on the emptied historical Palestinian neighborhoods, such as terra sine tempore and “ahistorical” narratives. In Al-’Ajami neighborhood, where the Palestinians who evaded expulsion during the 1948 War—the Nakba—were concentered, “freezing” planning policies were imposed until the 1990s, when “privatization” of the refugees’ houses and neoliberal urban renewal began. Following Rifkin’s (2017) notion of “temporal orientation,” this article explores the various temporal experiences of the Palestinians in Al-’Ajami, including waiting, uncertainty, rushing, and a sense of being left out of time. To grasp the multitude of forces acting upon the community, I conducted interviews with six long-standing Palestinian grassroots activists. Analysis of the narratives reveals the various temporalities and rhythms created by the intersectionality and accumulation of oppression and dispossession, including settler–colonial policies and neoliberalism, and illuminates how Jaffa’s Palestinians have coped with—and resisted—them throughout the period under discussion.

“Uh, I’m not racist. You’re racist for calling me racist. Actually, that’s reverse racism!”

“I didn’t do that; I wasn’t even alive then.”

“Maybe it’s just all in your head.”

“We’re all human, aren’t we?”

You would be hard pressed to find a First Nations person in Australia who hasn’t seen or heard these statements at some point in their lives. Most of us know by now that these are tactics used by predominantly white people to avoid engaging in genuine and meaningful dialogue about race-based issues, and to further uphold systems of oppression that white communities continue to benefit from.

A settler community’s everyday: L. K. Bertram, The Viking Immigrants: Icelandic North Americans, University of Toronto Press, 2020

Description: From 1870 until 1914, almost one-quarter of the population of Iceland migrated to North America. The Viking Immigrants examines how the distinctive culture that emerged in Icelandic North American communities – from food and fashion to ghost stories and Viking parades – sheds light on a century and a half of change and adaptation.

Through an analysis of the history of everyday forms of expression, L.K. Bertram reveals the larger forces that shaped the evolution of an immigrant community. This exploration of the Icelandic North American community draws on rare and fascinating sources of community life, including oral histories, recipes, photographs, and memoirs. By using a multi-sensory approach to the immigrant experience, The Viking Immigrants uses often-overlooked cultural practices such as clothing production, the preservation of recipes, and the telling of ghost stories to understand tension and transformation in an immigrant community.
