Description: This book recovers the lost history of colonial Algeria’s communist movement. Meticulously researched – and the only English-language book on the Parti Communiste Algérien – it explores communism’s complex relationship with Algerian nationalism. During international crises, such as the Popular Front and Second World War years, the PCA remained close to its French counterpart, but as the national liberation struggle intensified, the PCA’s concern with political and social justice attracted growing numbers of Muslims. When the Front de Libération Nationale launched armed struggle in November 1954, the PCA maintained its organisational autonomy – despite FLN pressure. They participated fully in the national liberation war, facing the French state’s wrath. Independence saw two conflicting socialist visions, with the PCA’s incorporated political pluralism and class struggle on the one hand, and the FLN demand for a one-party socialist state on the other. The PCA’s pluralist vision was shattered when it was banned by the one-party state in November 1962. This book is of particular interest to students and scholars of Algerian history, French colonial history and communist history.

Abstract: Traditional knowledge and oral traditions histry are crucial lines of evidence in Aboriginal claims litigation and alternative forms of resolution, most notably claims commissions. This articleexplores the ways in which these lines of evidence pose numerous challenges in terms of how and where they can be presented, who is qulifies to present it, questions about whether this evidence can stand on its own, and the problems of developing appropriate measures to protect it from inappropriate use by outsiders while not unduly restricting access by the traditional owners.

Abstract: This article examines the mutually constitutive nature of mob rule and rule of law, arguing that American histories of lynching indicate it has been a form of state-sanctioned violence rather than a result of ‘lawlessness.’ The article furthermore argues that pro-lynching discourses remain ubiquitous in contemporary US culture, despite ostensible rejection of the practice. The persistence of pro-lynching ideologies and ‘modern-day lynchings’ indicates the ongoing need for anti-lynching movements; but, my analysis suggests these movements will be most successful when they critique the rule of law rather than idealize it.

The graphic design of settler colonialism: Deirdre Pretorius, ‘Graphic Design in South Africa: A Post-Colonial Perspective’, Journal of Design History, 2015

Abstract: This article offers a broad historical overview of the development of graphic design in South Africa and an analysis of a sample of recent South African graphic design informed by post-colonial theory, imperial studies and settler colonialism theory. The historical overview indicates how closely the development of graphic design in South Africa was implicated in settler colonialism in particular. Yet, graphic design in South Africa was also used to resist colonialism and following the 1994 democratic election there was optimism about its role in South Africa’s transformation. However, numerous challenges faced post-apartheid graphic design and to assess how it responded to these challenges this article analyses a number of categories of the 2013 Loerie Awards, which position themselves as the authority with regards to determining standards of excellence in brand communication in the region. In interrogating the representation in and the discourse created by the award-winning work the article concludes that graphic design in South Africa, as represented in this award scheme, does not reflect a substantial engagement with post-apartheid transformation challenges, which include the elimination of stereotypes, establishing gender equality and grappling with language and culture issues. Instead, the award scheme perpetuates narratives steeped in colonial and imperialist discourses.

Abstract: This article examines the capacity of the common law to provide for the recognition of tikanga and Māori customary law. It details the limited and mixed way in which courts have treated Māori customary law within the common law thus far, focusing particularly on the recent articulations in the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court. It then looks at the many inherent limitations and barriers that are erected by the common law and argues that there is potential for the common law to be developed so that it becomes a limited vehicle for Māori customary law to be afforded recognition in the state legal system in the 21st century.

Abstract: Settler economies are characterized by abundant natural resources, but natural capital is not homogeneous between countries and it can produce different consequences in terms of economic performance. This paper discusses the effect of natural resources on economic performance as part of the debate about the “curse of natural resources hypothesis”. We consider energy natural resources and focus on two settler societies, New Zealand and Uruguay. There is very little literature about the economic development of settler economies that identifies differences within the “club” count ries that have different natural resources. We look for differences in energy natural endowments, basically coal and suitable conditions for hydroelectric generation, to explain at least partially the different welfare levels between the two economies. In the nineteenth century and the early decades of the twentieth century, New Zealand and Uruguay were similar in many ways such as production structure, movements in production factors and insertion in international markets, but there were huge differences in income per capita levels. To explain this, we need to study other aspects of the economic system. The analytical framework associated with the curse of natural resources offers some interesting lines of argument for our inquiry. The conformation of a “modern” production structure requires the re to be sufficient energy supply at competitive costs, to justify exploiting the corresponding natural resources. Our analysis shows that New Zealand’s better performance in coal production and better natural conditions to generate electric energy at low cost – thus offering energy at low prices – explain those differences. New Zealand’s advantage in energy endowments at least partially explains the development of a dairy sector, certain energy – intensive manufactures and a more efficient use of railways.
